I’m inspired by the land around me

Howdy, I’m Patrick White.

I’m a painter and drawer based in the Nelson region of New Zealand. My inspiration comes from the land, the water and the buildings around where I live.

A Polynesian stick map image had a lifelong effect on me – I found the patterns and organisation of shape to be a real delight. I like to include earth colours and driftwood stick grids in my works to distinguish patterns and the relationship between shapes.

I’ve won awards in the Nelson Impressions Art Awards, Marlborough Art Awards, and was a finalist in the Taranaki Lysaght Watt Art Awards. But I don’t like to go on about those sorts of things.

You can find me at 4am in my studio

I like to get up early and work on my paintings for a few hours before the day really gets underway. My studio is tucked into the spare bedroom of our house, perched over the beautiful Ruby Bay.

Most of my pictures are detailed pen and colour drawings. I often use a technique called ‘pointillism’, where a painting is created from many tiny dots. It takes me anywhere from 5 to 50 hours to create a picture, which I then paint over with acrylics.

Where can you find my work?

In summer and spring, you can often find me at the Nelson Saturday Market or the Motueka Sunday Market. Come say hi!

My work is also available from the Cool Store Gallery in Mapua and Tasman’s Kereru Gallery.

    2. Good morning Pam, I am back from Northland and have asked the printers to make a copy of Paua and Kete . I should have the print on Friday afternoon but it could be Monday morning . The exact size of the print is 460mm by 320mm. I will give you a call when I have it ready. Thanks Patrick

    3. Hi Pam , I collected a print of Paua and Kete today but the printer has made it a little smaller than the original. They have printed it about A3 size . The exact size is 400mm by 285mm. The print does look very good but it is smaller than you asked for. I would sell this one for $60 if you are interested. Let me know what you think. Patrick
